The shortened MLB season is almost upon us and due to modifications that the MLB has made to accommodate this season, it drastically changes fantasy baseball for us. We have come up with (2) options that we need to vote on. The first is an option to play the shortened season under certain parameters. The second is to cancel our FOD season and roll everything over to next year.
Option 1: Play the season
Regular season would run first 5 weeks (7/23 - 8/30)
Week 1: 4 matchups against own division rivals (7/23 - 8/2)
Week 2: 5 matchups against separate division (8/3 - 8/9)
Week 3: 5 matchups against separate division (8/10 - 8/16)
Week 4: 5 matchups against separate division (8/17 - 8/23)
Week 5: 4 matchups against own division rivals (8/24 - 8/30)
This would give us 23 matchups for regular season which is very close to what we have each year for regular season. Each matchup would still run weekly against your opponent. Fantrax has the option to face multiple opponents at once, so instead of facing off with 1 team each week you would be facing off against 4/5 teams each week. Each team would get to play every team once during the regular season, except they would play each team in their own division twice.
So e.g. for the NL East division in week 1 (7/23 - 8/2), I would have 4 matchups against the other teams in my division. This would also occur in week 5 (8/24 - 8/30)
Phillies vs Orioles (7/23 - 8/2)
Phillies vs Braves (7/23 - 8/2)
Phillies vs Tigers (7/23 - 8/2)
Phillies vs Mets (7/23 - 8/2)
Then week 2 all my matchups would be against another division for e.g. NL East vs NL West
Phillies vs Rockies (8/3 - 8/9)
Phillies vs Dodgers (8/3 - 8/9)
Phillies vs White Sox (8/3 - 8/9)
Phillies vs Cardinals (8/3 - 8/9)
Phillies vs Giants (8/3 - 8/9)
Week 3 against AL East teams
Week 4 against AL West teams
Week 5 against own division teams again
Playoffs would run the same way we do every year with 8 teams: the 4 divisional winners and 2 wild-cards per league. Finals would run over 2 weeks per usual.
Quarterfinals: 8/31 - 9/6
Semis: 9/7 - 9/13
Finals: 9/14 - 9/27
As a result of COVID the following player management protocols would be in affect:
-Those players opting out will not be eligible to have injury insurance used, if the player has been tagged with it.
-Those players that contract COVID during the season, will be eligible to be placed on IR
-The players that have opted out of the season will not be eligible to be placed on IR. They would either need to be placed on the bench or reserve roster, if players do in fact have options
-All contracts and service time will be reduced by 1 year if season is played
-The trade deadline will be August 14th, 2020.
-The FOD Draft will take place on Aug. 2nd, 2020
Option 2: Cancel The Season
Due to the severely shortened season, players opting out as well as COVID restrictions that could result in players quarantining for 2 weeks (9-10 matchups) as a result of a positive test we could cancel this season which will result in the following:
-All contracts will rollover as they currently are to the 2021 Season which means years and arbitration would not be reduced. For example: Currently Rafael Devers contract details of $400k 5yrs ('22,'23,'24) ARB 4 Options and in 2021 the contract would be $400k 5yrs ('23,'24,'25) ARB 4 Option with the arb years being pushed ahead as a result of the rollover.
-The annual entry fees will rollover to next year, resulting in no entry fees due in 2021.
-The trade deadline will be August 14th, 2020.
-The FOD Draft will take place on Aug. 2nd, 2020
-Salary cap will fully reset based on current roster as we begin the 2021 Start of Season Process in January 2021.
We will be conducting a poll to decide which option to collectively pursue. Majority vote wins.
