Yankees response: Deal from depth. Sanchez and Posey have been on the block the entire offseason and this was far better than any offer I received. I wasn't ready to carry Buster Posey, Gary Sanchez, Austin Hedges, and Mike Zunino on my roster next year. So, rather than be handicapped by what is a buyers market, and forced to carry aging value pieces, I choose to get the best value I could and use the opportunity to get younger. Sanchez will slot into Posey's spot and replace the production. Gyorko/Lawrie will slot into Cano's spot and provide value until Albies is ready. Hoping Ray and Sheffield pan out and the $9M is spent wisely.
Unfortunately this is free agency and the deal is dependent on the cap space and the ability to spend it in free agency. I'm asking for Mat to make an immediate ruling on this trade or reverse it.
Royals:
Simply put I am selling out on future to win now. I am giving up 3 top 100 prospects in any inner circle, #12 Ozzie Albies, #27 Corey Ray and #78 Justus Sheffield.
Ozzie is legit and will anchor 2b in Atlanta soon and for years to come
Corey was the #4 pick in last years' FYPD and was considered the best college player in the draft
Justus - was a stud power lefty in the Cleveland and remains a stud in the newly revamped Yankee farm system.
What I get in return is very good, but aging 2B in Robinson Cano for a total of 3 years including this year. I have been trying desperately to upgrade at 2B all offseason. I also get a top tier catch in Posey, a 29 year old catcher that is coming off what I hope was a fluke down year. I inherit his 6M deal for a total of 5 years including this year.
I squeaked into the playoffs last year...this offseason I was faced with a decision, sell my stars for youth and build toward the future or sell youth and make a run at it.
Honestly, most of you know from trade offers and or communication that I have had that I tried selling some of my stars first. Miggy, Tulu and even Braun had very little "serious" offers IMO. Turns out several of the members of this league do not value these fore mentioned players because of their age. Miggy is 33 and will turn 34 this offseason, the best offer I received for him was a top 25 prospect and a similar but lesser valued 1B. Not enough in my eyes. Cano is the exact same age 33 and will turn 34 and does not carry the same value as Miggy. What I am saying is that I feel that so far, this league has under valued the "aging" consistent player. Player value is subjective and is based on needs, wants, position scarcity (inflated or not) and position depth.
Trading up and coming youth studs for "aging" veterans is a risk / gamble I am open to taking. Either it works and I get a run at the "boss around here" as the Rockies stated. Or it does not pan out and I am left with an aging team that will struggle for a few years until the aging contracts come off the books.
Sounds like a fantasy baseball gamble to me! Vote how you want, but FA just opened up so I need a immediate ruling so I can move forward.
