I think a discussion should be held about the potential to realign divisions, or something of the sort. (Per the season long standings 6/7 of the top teams are from the AL)
The divisions are pretty lopsided now, I will say I love the NL/AL aspect and would want to keep it the same, but really good teams are being kept out of the playoffs, only because they are in the wrong division.
A few options that could be discussed..
1) Realign divisions by 2017 finishing records.. Division 1 would be (#1, #5, #9, #13, #17).. Division 2 would be (#2, #6, #10, #14, #18) Division 3 would be (#3, #7, #11, #15, #19) Division 4 would be (#4, #8, #12, #16, #20) **the main drawback to doing this, is realignment would probably have to happen every few years or so.
2) Keep the same divisions, but the "wildcard teams" can come from any division. Meaning the best 4 records (that aren't division winners) will make the playoffs.
i could be in the minority here, and everyone might be peachy with how things are now. Just trying to start some discussion to make it fair for everyone and not penalize teams for being in the wrong divisions.

Yeah, I was going to bring this up in the off-season as well. Totally agree that something needs to be changed up. No disrespect to the teams who did make it in playoffs, but we have 2-3 good teams get left out of the playoffs while 2 teams with sub .500 records made it in. Since these divisions were just created randomly when we started this league back in 2015 (they weren't made using any method or anything - it was just random), I don't think there is really any reason to not realign them (At least some). I understand that there will always be ebbs and flows and teams will go in and out of competition over the years, but things are VERY unbalanced right now.
As for what you suggested Jarrod, I like both ideas. However, because option 1 would probably require realignment in future years, I'd probably prefer the 2nd option, but with a slight adjustment. Here is what I propose:
I propose we do division winners make it into playoffs, regardless of record. However, the 4 remaining best teams REGARDLESS of division or league, make playoffs as wild card teams (e.g. all the teams could come from the AL if that's where the 4 best teams were). Also, if we do that, I suggest we also do playoff re-seeding. What this means is that if Rockies had the #1 seed in the playoffs, he would play the lowest seeded team remaining in the semi finals. This would help to ensure that the teams who proved they were the best during the regular season get rewarded for being the best teams.
ALSO, I think we should do at least some tweaking to the divisions before the 2018 season. We don't need to radically switch things up, but I do think we need to move some teams around. For example, maybe we swap one of the better teams in the AL West (or 2 teams from that division) with a team (or teams) from the NL East and/or NL West. No disrespect to the teams in the NL East or NL West, but the NL East has had back to back years with the division winner finishing with a sub .500 record. Also, I believe the 2nd wild card from the NL has also been under .500 in each of the last seasons (while teams with over .500 records have missed out just due to being in the AL). I just think it's a problem when you have a team like the Rangers this year who finished with .563 winning % and he misses playoffs while 2 teams under .500 get in...
Let me know your thoughts!

I like option 2 from Jarrod. I like the division being based off where your adopted MLB team. Also, with new owners changing the adopted team we already realign each year. The Yankees has requested to change to the Brewers and that would put them in the weak NL East and Baltimore would move to the AL East. Last offseason, the Pirates moved to Detroit and Orioles moved to Atlanta and the Nationals move to Baltimore. So realignment happens all the time. Taking next 4 best teams just make it easier then realigning everyone because great teams can become bad ones and bad ones can become good teams over one year.

If we do best 4 teams regardless of division are wildcard, I think we have to add playoff re-seeding. Also, I still think we should move a team from the AL West to the NL East or NL West. But we can discuss the details later - I think the biggest thing is adjusting how playoff teams are selected

You would have my vote to take the division winners and the next best four.

I hope all our professional leagues don't do this when one league is stronger then the other. If we are trying to emulate MLB, then let's emulate MLB. They don't reshuffle division or leagues when one gains an advantage..
Play better.. I prefer to be stuck with the Rockies, beating him is worth more then the money..

I agree with Stephen. With the Yankees requesting a location change for his franchise and Atlanta most likely improving significantly with an active owner, it should be more even next year. Atlanta won 120 games with an owner that was inactive for roughly 4 months.

To clarify, are you guys saying no to changing up playoffs at all? If so, I definitely disagree strongly there. While I also disagree with not tweaking divisions some, I can understand the logic behind not doing so. However, as for determining playoff teams, I think it's super silly to split it up by AL and NL. I like that winning your division means something (e.g. gets you into playoffs), but I don't like a system that allows 2-3 sub .500 teams to get into playoffs over teams who are clearly better just because they were arbitrarily placed into the league that they were when we started this league. In a league as competitive and difficult as this, I think we have to be putting the best teams in playoffs...

As for divisions being more even next year, I don't necessarily agree with that either. The AL West is BY FAR the best division in our fantasy league. 5 of the top 10 teams are from the AL West. We have 5 of the top 10 teams in the league (and 4 of the top 8 - that'd be 4 playoff teams from the same division if we did playoffs straight up by record). I think one of the teams in the AL West should move to one of the weaker divisions. Maybe Yanks and another team from the AL West swap with 2 teams from the NL? I don't think it'd be very difficult to do...

We're not a professional league... those professional leagues placed their teams in divisions based on a variety of factors. We didn't really use any method to pick our divisions... teams were just placed in divisions based on the teams they picked back in 2015. To add to that, over half of the original owners in the league (probably closer to 2/3 of the league) aren't here anymore. Also, let's keep in mind that professional leagues DO realign the divisions from time to time.

It's not like we have an unbalanced schedule. The least deserving team was a division winner.

That being said, if you want to swap me to the AL West, i'd be fine with that. I honestly don't know how I won 150 games.

There's no checks and balances here for GM performance. Im completely fine with keeping divisions the same outside of Yankees changing to Brewers, which would swap out Yankees/Brewers for Orioles since Orioles is already an AL team. Which it looks like he's already requested to do. I don't know why it would be a big deal to send the top 4 teams who don't win the division to the playoffs; however.. Theres some solid discussion going on and that's what this was intended for, so we have plenty of time to hash this out before next year starts. If we wanted to start small and just make the Yankees change I could be on board with that and progressively see where things go. I think Phillies has drastically changed his franchise around, from rebuild to competitor over the last few months as well. So that will help improve the NL East as well.
