Curious to find out what people think of the slide - legal or not? Deliberate or Not? Does it matter EE was beating the throw anyhow? - and the dresses comment by Gibbons. Sexist or not?

I really don't understand the opposing view for why the slide was acceptable considering what Bautista did was against the rules before the new slide rules... you've never been able to deliberately grab another players ankles while he's trying to make a play. I haven't heard Gibbons' comments though - I'll need to look them up.

Just read Gibbons' comments. While he shouldn't have made that remark, I don't think he meant anything negative by it. I don't agree with the statement, but I totally agree that people need to lighten up and stop assuming he's some sexist bigot because of an emotionally driven comment.
Back to the slide: do people really think it's acceptable for a player to grab another player's foot while he's trying to turn a double play? As I said before, that's never been acceptable... if Gibbons has a problem with losing because of that play, he needs to talk to his player, Jose Bautista, and tell him not to make a bone headed play like that.

Agree with Stro's.. I don't see how anyone could even argue that was legal per the new rules.. It was a bush league play even under the old rules, Joey Batts is a big time douche anyways so it doesn't surprise me (he was a jerk before the bat flip, so don't say I'm calling him a tool douche for that).

The argument that's being made in Toronto is that he was in line with his slide and if you play a video of his slides side by side with this slide, he always has his arms in that position. Their argument is that the contacts was incidental.

That's a very silly argument then. First, there is zero chance that was incidental... if you watch the slide, it's abundantly clear that he meant to hit the guy's foot. However, even if you can somehow prove it was incidental, it doesn't change the fact that he blatantly interfered in the play...

I liked Jay Mohrs take on the Gibbons comment, paraphrased it was something like: "he wasn't being negative towards women, he was making a statement of being delicate and passive. The understood attitude of a woman wearing a dress is acting ladylike. Women can be tough and rugged but generally don't act that way when wearing a dress. By talking about wearing a dress he was implying that the players should act conservatively and reserved."
I don't think I give Gibbons that much credit to think out his comments that much, lol. But I thought it was an interesting perspective.

Being that I'm a Rays fan, I thought the slide was not in accord with the old rules also. It clearly shows Bautista trying to disrupt Forsythe's throw by grabbing his ankle. Whether EE would have been safe or not, the throw may not have been offline if the ankle wasn't grabbed and 2 runs would not have scored.
