Alright everyone, we are set to draft and we already have our first significant poll to go through. At issue is the fact that we're drafting mid-season, which creates havoc when dealing with rookies and the 130 AB / 50 IP setting.
There are 3 Options available for selection in this case:
1. Use the 130 AB / 50 IP from the beginning of the season. In this case, guys like Kris Bryant would only be available in the minors league draft. 2. Use the 130 / 50 IP from the date of the draft. In this case, guys like Kris Bryant would be available for the Majors draft. 3. Split that number in half and use how many they had as of the draft date - which is almost exactly occurring mid-season anyhow. This would make the new setting for Rookies for our Majors draft 65 AB and 25 IP.
I'd like to settle on 2 of these before putting them up for a poll, so please add in your input below.
Thanks,
Mat - CardsGM

One clarifying question, will the rookie draft be the reverse order of the pro draft? If it is then number 1. If not then I would say number 2.

I'd vote for #1 & #2. Those are the most clear cut choices, in my opinion.

I say #1 and #2 as well, those seem like the best options.

Agreed with Rays, I'm fine with putting 1 and 2 up for the vote.

#2 because you know that certain guys will be MLB ready when you take them in your minors draft. Your making minors picks- already knowing what the future holds.
If i am drafting first in the Minors draft, i don't have to take a 3b or SS- because i have a lock in Stud Cats between Bryant or Correa.. Let somebody else waste a pick on those positions- I have an borderline All-Star player ready to go..
May i suggest the team that drafts first in the MLB portion, Drafts last in the MiLB portion. You shouldn't be first both times, nor should you be last..

You shouldn't be first both times, nor should you be last.. Your second suggestion goes directly against the first. If all owners have no idea when they'll be drafting in the Milb draft, they can't do what you describe. The whole premise is that the draft be random. What I could propose is that the Top 10 in the MLB draft be randomly selected for the bottom 10 in the Milb draft and vice versa. I personally agree that going with what's happening now is better than reverting to the past, but it is a league decision.

To be honest, I really don't understand why the first option is an option... Why are we drafting players based on their minor league status months ago when we have updated, accurate information to use now? It just doesn't make any sense to me. Plus, its going to be more difficult to figure out who all was under that limit at the beginning of the season, but isn't now. Does that make sense?

Plus, its going to be more difficult to figure out who all was under that limit at the beginning of the season, but isn't now. Does that make sense? I completely agree, but it's up to the league to decide. Make the sound case and hope it changes some minds. What I also like about the possibility of having Bryant and company in the majors draft is that they add complexity to the draft and allow us to get deeper in the minors draft. There's no reason someone should get 1 less pick in the minors draft because they have Bryant on that roster. He is 100% not going to remain on their minors roster, so why have him there to begin with? The devil's advocate would say that doing it that way allows for 7 years of controllability (this year he'd be promote and get a 1-Minors contract, then he'd be signed to a max 6 year contract at $400,000). To me, that's the biggest issue. I entirely believe Bryant and some others should cost $6,000,000. It gets even more interesting when you start considering the high ceiling guys who haven't proved it as much as the top guys. Are you willing to spend $6,000,000 on those and take them in the top 3 rounds, or do you wait and hope to get them for $3,000,000? Makes things much more interesting. For those at the bottom of the majors draft, I can see why they would vote to have Bryant and company in the minors draft, but that's also why I believe both drafts should be random. To mitigate people voting for their own situation.

Let's keep the dialogue going, and votes can always be changed, so don't think it's set in stone once you vote. We also would like all 20 teams to vote.

Guys like Bryant and Correa should not be available in the minor league draft. That would make the league very unbalanced from the start. As you said, the top 2 picks in the minor league draft would be able to draft and sign correa and Bryant to max 6 year deals for only $400k... Those teams would have top stars on their team for a measly $400k/yr for 7 years. Isn't the point of the minor league draft to draft minor league players and not major leaguers??? I'd really like to hear some justification for the other option considering there are already 6 votes for it

I'd really like to hear some justification for the other option considering there are already 6 votes for it The justification is that if the draft had been held pre-season, they would be minor leaguers and the situation you paint would be unfolding now. Either way, if people draft well they will get gems in the minors that allow them to keep some studs for 7 years. That's what drafting well is all about. The other justification for it is that if Astros gets Mike Trout, why can't Athletics get Kris Bryant to even things out? The guys drafting last in the Majors draft should have the opportunity to even the scales. Because both drafts will be snaked, there is no advantage either way. With the amount of talent still available in the minors and majors, there is no issue. By deciding to have Bryant available in the minors draft, Athletics is actually going to get lesser players in the majors draft - since people will grab the better remaining major leaguers before the 20th/21st picks, and so everything evens out either way. The final option would be to do without the draft until the MLB season ends. But I'm guessing most owners want to get the draft out of the way.

Stats can't be live during the draft otherwise someone could get called up and eclipse the threshold mid draft (it's going to be a long draft), becoming available in a later round. So, the discussion is when do we freeze the stats. I'd argue the only clear cut way to do it is the beginning of 2015. I'm not sure there is a site where you can look up a players stats as of a date, and unless someone is willing to go through all active players and document their starts at the start date, and I'm talking well beyond Bryant and Correa, then the start of 2015 is the only simple logical way of doing it. Or was there another idea?
